There is the lingering question of War Machine’s whereabouts during The Avengers, something that was never answered until now.

A few days ago Marvel announced that they would be releasing an ’Iron Man 3? comic book prequel that explains the burning question of what the hell War Machine was doing when the Avengers Assembled to defend the earth from an alien invasion orchestrated by Loki.

Marvel’s solicitation for the comic reads: “As Tony Stark prepares for his next venture, he tasks War Machine with a mission of his own. War Machine faces his biggest test as a hero, while Iron Man takes on the Battle of New York.”

Iron Man 3‘s plot synopsis: “Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?”

Marvel’s Kevin Feige gives a little context. “He basically loses all of his toys and is forced to just use his mind to rebuild and to face his biggest enemy, resulting in the most advanced Iron Man suit yet. He’s ultimately the engineering superhero. He’s so charming and so flamboyant that sometimes you forget that’s what he is: ‘Hey, kids, learn this stuff and you can maybe build an Iron Man suit.”

“A lot of this movie is about characters going back into the shadows for various reasons and characters who have been in the shadows coming out and into the light for the first time,” says Marvel Studios president of Production, Kevin Feige. “It is Tony who, for various reasons, finds himself receding into the darkness. I don’t mean emotional darkness, I mean literally ducking out of the spotlight. And we’ll see other characters stepping up who have pulled strings from the background, starting to show their hand.” Regarding The Mandarin not being Chinese, like in the comics, Feige says “It’s less about his specific ethnicity than the symbolism of various cultures and iconography that he perverts for his own end.”
