The show focuses on Olivia “Liv” Moore, a medical student who has her life planned out for her, until she goes to a party that ends up into a zombie feeding frenzy. As a newly undead, Liv does what she can to lead a normal life as she stays isolated from friends and family in order to hide her zombie state. She works at a dead-end job at the morgue to lead a quiet life as well as chewing out brains from dead bodies. She soon gets discovered by her boss Dr. Chakrabarti (Rahul Kohli), who doesn’t seem to be fazed by her zombified state as he helps her stay as human as possible. Plus, every time Liv eats a brain, she also gets part of the dead person’s memories. She uses this ability to help Detective Clive Babineaux (Malcolm Goodwin) solve cases, who thinks that Liv has a gift of a psychic.

Talking with the Television Critics Association, show creator Rob Thomas talked about the differences between the comic book and the show. “We didn’t hue terribly close to the source material,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.

In the comic, there’s a whole monster universe…and we wanted to stay strictly zombie. We really needed a story engine. We wanted a case-of-the-week show. In the comic, the character is a grave digger. By making her an assistant medical examiner and putting her in the morgue, it gave us our case of the week that we wanted.
