Pine Regrets not Getting The Series Right. It is looking very unlikely that Chris Pine will be making a return to the Jack Ryan franchise. In a recent interview with Moviefone the Into The Woods actor was asked if there were talks about any further adventures for him in the iconic role and he had this to say,
“No. I don’t think it made enough money for that to happen. That’s one of my deep regrets, that we didn’t totally get that right. It’s a great franchise and if it’s not me then I hope it gets a fifth life at this point. It’s just great. I love the spy genre. I hope it’s done again and with a great story.”
Even though Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit received a tepid critical reception, the fact that a sequel has not been greenlit despite a profitable box office return is a frightening indictment of the current state of Hollywood’s increasingly risk averse profit model. Movie studios are looking to hedge their bets with “sure thing” blockbuster franchises and as a result are marginalizing the mid-budget film market. If films like Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit don’t hit a financial home run during their first at bat we can be sure that the studio execs are going to invest their time and finances into several more Transformers or Ninja Turtles types of franchises.
Hollywood has been adapting the Jack Ryan focused, Tom Clancy franchise into films for over 20 years and it is a sure bet that Shadow Recruit will not be the last iteration that we see. It is only a matter of time before another male action hero takes up the mantle previously held by Harrison Ford, Alec Baldwin and Ben Affleck. Which Hollywood star do you think should take over the franchise?
