JAMAICA INN: Jessica Brown Findlay cast in BBC One TV Adaptation

Jessica Brown Findlay

Jessica Brown Findlay cast in Jamaica Inn. The casting of Jessica Brown Findlay in Jamaica Inn answers the question of who would play the female lead in the BBC One TV adaptation. Jessica Brown Findlay will pay the role of Mary Yellan, “a young woman sent to live with her aunt (Joanne Whalley) after the death of her mother.”

On the people behind the scenes of Jamaica Inn:

Emma Frost (The White Queen) wrote the [three-part] adaptation that’s produced by Origin Pictures and directed by BAFTA winner Philippa Lowthorpe (Call The Midwife).

This new BBC One take is produced by David Thompson and Dan Winch. Executive producers are Origin’s Ed Rubin and Hilary Heath and the BBC’s Sarah Stack and Screen Yorkshire’s Hugo Heppell.

On Jamaica Inn‘s previous incarnations:

A film adaptation of the novel was produced in 1939, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, and starring Charles Laughton and Maureen O’Hara. The film differs from the book in some respects, with Francis Davey being replaced by a Squire Pengallon (Laughton). Du Maurier was not enamoured of the production.

In 1983 there was a UK TV adaptation Jamaica Inn starring Jane Seymour, Trevor Eve, Billie Whitelaw and Patrick McGoohan. It was closer to the original story than the Hitchcock film.

Jamaica Inn‘s plot synopsis: based on the novel by Daphne du Maurier, “When Mary arrives at the eerie, isolated Jamaica Inn, she finds her once carefree aunt is now firmly under the spell of domineering husband Joss (Sean Harris). The inn, it turns out, is a front for a smuggling ring. As Mary attempts to navigate her new surroundings, she falls for bad boy Jem (Matthew McNulty) and begins questioning her own morals and loyalties until an ultimate test reveals her true self. Ben Daniels and Shirley Henderson also star. Shooting starts this week in Cornwall, Yorkshire and Cumbria with a 2014 airdate to be confirmed.”
