Netflix CEO Suggests Global Netflix. Netflix is looking to make a global version of Netflix that would make VPN piracy obsolete. The plan would be to offer users all over the world the same viewing catalogs so that they would not have to incorporate VPNs to access content blocked from their region. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings also stated that he believes a global version of Netflix would cut down on piracy.

The VPN thing is a small little asterisk compared to piracy. Piracy is really the problem around the world.

The basic solution is for Netflix to get global and have its content be the same all around the world so there’s no incentive to [use a VPN]. Then we can work on the more important part which is piracy.

The key thing about piracy is that some fraction of it is because [users] couldn’t get the content. That part we can fix. Some part of piracy however is because they just don’t want to pay. That’s a harder part. As an industry, we need to fix global content.

In order to achieve their goal of ending VPN piracy, the biggest hurdle Netflix faces is having the major television and movie studios agree to global licensing deals. Studios often stagger the release of their media across different countries and tailor specific ad campaigns to each region, allowing them to leverage their product’s financial demand.

Studios still haven’t figured out if Netflix (and their streaming model) is a friend or foe, and for the most part have behaved like crotchety old men by sticking to their stubborn old ways while a new generation passes them by. The studios have displayed a short-sighted tendency to do what’s good for their profit margins right now as opposed to creating a radical new infrastructure that is beneficial to the industry for years to come. Until someone proves that streaming services are the most profitable way to do business, we aren’t likely to see the studios bending over backwards to accommodate industry newcomers like Netflix.
