NEW MUTANTS: Josh Boone to Direct X-Men Spin-off

X-Men Spin-off New Mutants to Be Directed By Josh Boone. The X-Men franchise is expanding as their next spin-off will be titled New Mutants with The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone helming the project. The new film will be written by Boone and Knate Gwaltney.

Deadline first reported that 20th Century Fox made the announcement about the potential spin-off to the X-Men film universe, joining the likes of Deadpool and Gambit. “We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe,” producer Simon Kinberg said. “And so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters.”

Introduced in 1982, The New Mutants focused on a group of teenage mutants who become heroes in training. The series introduced the lesser known mutants in X-Men, including Cypher, Magik, Dani Moonstar, and Wolfsbane. Popular mutants like Professor Xavier, Magneto, Kitty Pryde, and Deadpool made appearances in the series as well. Some members of the team appeared in the latest film X-Men: Days of Future Past including Blink, Warpath, and Sunspot, but it’s unclear whether they will appear in the new film.

Another possibility is bringing the young cast in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse including Jubilee and the younger versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, and Nightcrawler.

It’s currently unknown when the film will be released, but Fox set up 2018 for an X-Men film, so it’s possible this would be the date for New Mutants.
