DC Universe 10th Anniversary Collection Panel [NYCC 2017]

DC Universe 10th Anniversary Collection

The main stage hall at 2017 New York Comic-Con was a fun place to be on Thursday, particularly for DC animated fans. True DC legends such as Kevin Conroy, Bruce Timm, and Alan Burnett were in attendance to celebrate 10 years of animated DC filmmaking.

Ten years ago, the creative minds at Warner Bros and DC got the idea to dedicate serious effort into their animated properties. The goal was to create films which were ripped straight from the pages of DC comics, and to aim them towards a slightly older audience. The result has been 30 beloved films which have now been collected in an incredible box set, the DC Universe 10th Anniversary Collection.

Available on November 7 (but available right now for pre-order), this limited edition Blu-Ray set contains enough extras to fill a fan’s paradise. With 32 discs, not only do you get 30 movies, including Batman: Under the Red HoodAll-Star Superman, and The Dark Knight Returns 1 & 2, but you also get all 5 DC Showcase animated short films, a 40-page adult coloring book, and 3 collectible coins. Additional featurettes include documentaries, panels at other conventions, and a special tribute to the legendary artist Darwyn Cooke.

While this glorious product is what the panel was there to sell, it did not make up much of the actual panel discussion. Much attention was paid to DC’s recent foray into R-rated animated films. As you may know, there was controversy recently when DC produced an animated version of Alan Moore’s divisive classic The Killing Joke. The resulting film brought out a lot of strong opinions from fans – some of love and some of hate – but listening to the panelists on Thursday gave the clear impression that DC was proud of its feature.

Tara Strong, who voiced Batgirl in The Killing Joke and is known for her role as Harley Quinn in the Batman video games, calls the contentious Killing Joke her favorite DC animated film. Strong, who has voiced Batgirl in several kid-friendly shows and films, gave the film high marks for its stunning animation and intense performances. Strong was not alone in her praise of The Killing Joke, with both Vanessa Marshall (voice of Wonder Woman) and Batman himself Kevin Conroy piling it on. Marshall found the film especially fulfilling because it was the only DC animated film get a theatrical release.

While Conroy showed love for The Killing Joke, the biggest response from the audience of the night came from Conroy giving a shout out to Batman: Mask of the Phantasm as his true favorite. However, the thunderous reaction from the audience became dolorous grumbles, when it was revealed that the beloved Mask of the Phantasm would not be included in the 32-disc box set.

Despite that small hiccup, the panel was terrific entertainment for the whole audience. One of the most memorable moments came shortly after the discussion of R-rated movies began. The production inclinations of Bruce Timm versus James Tucker became a topic of conversation, with Timm opting for more conservative ratings while Tucker liked to push the envelope. When the audience made it clear that they loved some good old-fashioned R content, Kevin Conroy ambled to the front of the stage, and performed a seductive striptease for everyone in attendance. Thankfully, he gave up the act after all his shirt buttons were undone.

All in all, the night was a delight for everyone, and I think more than a handful of that crowd will be pre-ordering that anniversary box set as soon as possible.
