Sequel To Pacific Rim’s Title Confirmed As Pacific Rim: Maelstrom
While Maelstrom has long been floated as a possible name for the action-packed blockbuster sequel, the title was only confirmed today by Boyega. The Star Wars: The Force Awakens actor , who is set to play the son of Idris Elba‘s character from the first film Stacker Pentecost, shared a picture on Instagram showing that production has finally started on the Pacific Rim sequel. This wasn’t the only thing Boyega revealed however: also displayed was a copy of the movie’s script, which identified Maelstrom as its title.
Pacific Rim: Maelstrom will be directed by Steven S. DeKnight (Spartacus, Marvel’s Daredevil) based on the world created by Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham and from a script by Jurassic World co-writer Derek Connolly. Thomas Tull, Mary Parent, Jon Jashni, and del Toro will produce the action adventure film along with Boyega and Femi Oguns under their Upper Room Productions shingle. Cale Boyter will serve as the film’s executive producer.
The film will be distributed by Universal Pictures around the world with the exception of China. Pacific Rim: Maelstrom will arrive in theaters February 23, 2018.
The original Pacific Rim hit theaters in summer 2013 and grossed $101 million at the domestic box office.
