Kevin Spacey to co-star in Rebel in the Rye. The two-time Academy Award winner will portray a pivotal figure in iconic author J.D. Salinger’s life in the proposed biopic, which will be directed by Danny Strong.
Starring Mad Max: Fury Road and X-Men: Apocalypse alum Nicholas Hoult, the film will tell the story of the notoriously publicity-shy J.D. Salinger. Based on the recent biography, J.D. Salinger: A Life by Kenneth Slawenski, the movie will cover events from Salinger’s troubled childhood, his military service during World War II and subsequent struggles with PTSD, and his later accomplishments and relationships. Spacey will play the role of Whit Burnett, a professor and magazine editor who guided the famed author in his early days.
Salinger remains most well-known for the 1951 novel, The Catcher In The Rye, widely considered a classic and favorite among adolescent readers. Despite the book’s popularity and repeated attempts by movie companies to secure the rights to a big-screen adaptation, Salinger shot down any effort to make a film version of the book during his lifetime. His lasting opposition to a Catcher In The Rye film continues to discourage studios from making head-way on such a project, as evidenced by the fact that Salinger’s own story will be told on the silver screen before that of his novel’s.
Helmed by Danny Strong, the project appears to be in good hands. Not only has he written the screenplay for the film, he has an extensive background directing both movies and television shows. Per Comingsoon.net:
Strong is known best for creating the hit FOX show “Empire,” in which he has written and directed multiple episodes of the ratings and pop culture phenomenon. In addition he has written the screenplays for The Butler, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and Part 2 as well as the HBO Films Recount and Game Change. He has won a Golden Globe, two Emmys, two Writer’s Guild Awards and a Peabody.
