Rings Trailer 2

The latest movie trailer for The Ring franchise has forgone the the tedious practice of actually telling the viewer what the current film is about. Instead, this trailer tells the viewer the plotline for the first The Ring film. From the way that storyline is told over the footage for this film, the producers are trying to drive home the idea that Rings is more of the same.

As a marketing strategy, is that wise? Shouldn’t you be selling the new aspects of the film? A new take on the same formula? The first trailers Rings did that. This trailer is not even bothering, relying on nostalgia instead.

I believe that move was a bone-headed, arrogant, and ill-informed decision. No one wants to see the same thing over and over again. The producers of Rings didn’t even try to hide the un-originality of their current film with this trailer.

Because of that, the viewer certainly knows what they are going to get with this film. At least there is the plane scene in Rings to look forward to.

Rings‘ plot synopsis: “A new chapter in the beloved RING horror franchise. A young woman becomes worried about her boyfriend when he explores a dark subculture surrounding a mysterious videotape said to kill the watcher seven days after he has viewed it. She sacrifices herself to save her boyfriend and in doing so makes a horrifying discovery: there is a “movie within the movie” that no one has ever seen before…”
