RUNAWAY: Marvel and Hulu Teaming Up for Live-Action Adaptation [Hulu]

Runaways

Marvel and Hulu Developing TV Series Based on Runaways. In a bold move by Marvel, the comic book media giant has made a deal with streaming service Hulu to adapt Brian K. Vaughn’s popular Runaways into a television series. This marks the first time the two are working together.

Hulu has taken the same model as Netflix after announcing that they would no longer be doing free-streaming service. With the new service, Hulu is also taking a page off of Netflix by teaming with Marvel to develop a series based on the popular young adult superhero series Runaways. Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage will be in charge of development. According to Deadline, the series will loosely follow the story of six diverse teens who can’t stand the sight of each other but end up uniting against a common enemy – their parents.

Speaking on the project, Shwartz said, “I’m a long-time fan of Runaways and couldn’t be more excited to bring Brian and Adrian’s characters to life.” Savage added, “Josh and I can’t wait to get to work for Marvel and Hulu.”  Marvel TV head honcho Jeph Loeb also talked about the show saying, “We’ve known the Runaways‘ story would make great television and being lucky enough to have Josh and Stephanie — who have time and again created shows that speak so genuinely to this exact audience — write and produce the series is nothing short of remarkable.”

First published in 2003, Runaways followed a group of teenage kids who are the offspring of a villainous organization known as The Pride. The series ran for 18 issues before it got cancelled in September 2004. But, the series suddenly reemerged as a popular series, prompting Marvel to resurrect the title in 2005 and ran until 2009.
