Scary Stories: A Documentary Movie Trailer. Cody Meirick‘s Scary Stories: A Documentary (2016) movie trailer stars various interview subjects. Scary Stories: A Documentary‘s plot synopsis: “Scary Stories: A Documentary will explore the history and background of one of the most controversial works of modern children’s literature. In the 1980s and 1990s in elementary libraries across the United States these books developed a growing interest from boys and girls who were taken in by the gothic tales, the whimsical tone, and the ghostly illustrations. Now the Scary Stories book series stands as the most challenged children’s book of the last 30 years and a testament to the power of something that is often taken for granted: a good scary story.”
I have extremely faint and vague visual memories of this book by Alvin Schwartz, mostly consisting of the illustrations by Stephen Gammell. They were crude and unflinching, simple and dark and nihilistic. They were black and white, which added to the ‘not dumbing down for kids’ factor. I wish I remembered the stories themselves, but the last time I had contact with this book was probably twenty years ago. In any case, someone made a documentary on this series, and as an avid horror fan who is always on the hunt for a scary experience, I’ll be glad to settle for a documentary in which people revere and tell stories about this object of fear, instead.
