Showtime Offers Internet Streaming for Original Series & Live Broadcasts

Showtime begins online Internet streaming service. Like HBO Go ($14.99 per month), Showtime has now released stream service that bypasses the need for a potential viewer to have a cable subscription. The new Showtime streaming service is called “Showtime” and will launch in early July 2015. Showtime’s new streaming service will cost $10.99 to subscribers per month for unlimited, on-demand access to everything Showtime offers (e.g. every episode of its entire show library, movies, documentaries, and live programs) and is available now only on Apple devices (Macs, iPhones, iPads, iPod Touch, Apple TV), its first partner. Being able to stream live sporting events will be huge. If a bar or club simply gets Apple TV and subscribes to Showtime, they may be able to stream live sporting events to their patrons.

New partners beyond Apple will be announced in the near future. I do not imagine that Showtime will overlook the opportunity to be in Google’s App store, on Xbox Ones, on Playstation 4s, Roku, or as an option on upcoming HD TVs.

After this move, I see HBO lowering its HBO Go price and other American premium cable and satellite television networks offering a similar services to its audience.

Leslie Moonves, CBS Corporation’s President and Chief Executive Officer, had this to say about the new service and partnering with Apple:

“Going over-the-top means Showtime will be much more accessible to tens of millions of potential new subscribers,” said Moonves. “Across CBS, we are constantly finding new ways to monetize our programming by capitalizing on opportunities presented by technology. This works best when you have outstanding premium content – like we do at Showtime – and when you have a terrific partner like Apple – which continues to innovate and build upon its loyal customer base.”

Matthew C. Blank, Chairman and CEO, Showtime Networks Inc. had this to say:

“At Showtime, we’re excited to offer consumers the opportunity to subscribe in new ways, by simply having an internet connection,” said Blank. “Our intent is to make SHOWTIME available to viewers via every manner possible, giving them an enormous amount of choice in accessing our programming, starting with the season premieres of our award-winning series RAY DONOVAN and MASTERS OF SEX.”

Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services had this to say:

“We’re excited to offer Apple customers SHOWTIME’s live channels and extensive on demand library of great TV shows and movies, without a cable or satellite subscription,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Apple TV customers will now be able to subscribe to SHOWTIME directly and instantly start viewing their favorite programming with the same simplicity as buying an app.”

Showtime is offering potential clients a thirty day free trial of their new service who sign up through Apple in July.
