Adam Driver cast in Silence. The casting of Adam Driver in Silence (2015) answers the question of who play opposite Andrew Garfield and Ken Watanabe in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming drama. In the relatively short time since making his big screen debut in director Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar, Adam Driver has been making a name for himself among Hollywood’s elite. With a career in full throttle after breaking out on the hit HBO series Girls; this Julliard graduate is showing no signs of slowing down. Getting his feet wet in Noah Baumbach’s Francis Ha, rubbing elbows with Steven Spielberg in his critically acclaimed Lincoln, and followed by a recent turn in the Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis; this rising star is maintaining his humility with his day job as boyfriend to Lena Dunham’s character in Girls.
Who’s next on the shortlist of heavy hitters this new comer has his sights on working with? Legendary director Martin Scorsese, that’s who. Rumored to be in talks for roles in both the Batman vs. Superman and the Star Wars sequels, FilmBook has confirmed that the young actor has netted a lead role in Silence.
The film, based on an adaptation of Shusaku Endo‘s historical novel of the same name; tells the story of Portuguese missionaries persecuted in seventeenth-century Japan. The two Jesuit priests travel to Japan to investigate claims of religious persecution and discrimination in the time of Kakure Kirishitan (“Hidden Christians”) that followed the defeat of the Shimabara Rebellion. Garfield has been confirmed to be playing one of the priests, and we presume Driver will be playing the other as according to news sources, the remaining cast will be heavily Japanese. Watanabe will be playing their translator.
Scorsese’s adaptation of the award winning novel has apparently been on the director’s back-burner for years. Busy with awards season and press tours for his current hit The Wolf of Wall Street; it seemed another year would pass before the novel would be realized on-screen. Scorsese has said he plans for Silence to begin production next summer as ideas for an actual production of the film were put into motion last year when Garfield and Watanabe had been cast.
