SILENCIO (2016): Sony Pictures Classics Acquires Pedro Almodóvar’s Latest

Sony Pictures Classics Acquires Pedro Almodóvar's Silencio

Sony Pictures Classics Acquires Rights to Pedro Almodóvar’s Latest Film Silencio. The North American rights to Pedro Almodóvar‘s latest film, Silencio (2016), have been purchased by Sony Pictures Classics. Silencio‘s plot synopsis: “Julieta’s life in 2015 finds her on the verge of madness; 30 years earlier, we see a more prosperous time in her life.”

The plot synopsis for Silencio doesn’t reveal much – or rather, all we need to know – about Pedro Almodóvar’s latest film. As with most of his work, it’s best to know next to nothing before sitting down to feast your eyes on it. It’s a much more rewarding experience, I find, and I’d probably recommend his films to anyone that doesn’t mind learning Spanish or reading a few subtitles. The last Almodóvar film I experienced without prior knowledge regarding its story was The Skin I Live In (2011) – and it was an absolute pleasure. There are certain plot points and surprises in tone that are a delight to experience as the movie intends you to. That seems natural, but in this age of over-exposed story beats and knowing exactly what you’re in for before buying a ticket, I’d urge anyone to take a chance on Almodóvar films. They’re a blind buy.

According to Deadline,

Silencio charts the life of Julieta (played by Suarez and Ugarte) from 1985 to the present day. As she struggles to survive on the verge of madness, she finds her life is marked by a series of journeys revolving around the disappearance of her daughter. The film focuses on Almodovar’s familiar themes of destiny, guilt and what makes people abandon those they love.

Sony Pictures Classics has been working hand in hand with Almodóvar for quite a few years now. This will be the 10th time that Sony Pictures Classics acquires distribution rights to Almodóvar’s work.

Pedro Almodóvar‘s Silencio stars Adriana Ugarte, Emma Suárez, Daniel Grao, Dario Grandinetti, Inma Cuesta, Michelle Jenner, and Rossy de Palma.

I grew up in Hamburg to a German father and Ecuadorian mother. Obsessive student of film, Hip-Hop, and stand-up comedy. I love the dark dreambox that is the cinema auditorium. I love mountains and the ocean, but am equally exhilarated by the jungle of the city. I hope to one day create something that hits someone in the brain with thunderous effect.
