I’m getting really curious and excited about Southpaw. It seems like all the pieces are there to make this a simple, aggressive, tight story of perseverance and standing back up when all is lost. It’s fitting that Eminem is overseeing the soundtrack, as he was poised to star in this a few years back. It would’ve been a terrific role for him, as it seems to mirror his life in several important ways, and an aggressive come-back story is essentially the entire foundation of his last few albums. Knowing how obsessive and dedicated he is as an artist, it’s sound to assume the boxing training would’ve been no problem for his work ethic to tackle. As it stands, however, Gyllenhaal is our lead, and he looks perfect. I’m excited!

This second trailer is far tighter, shorter, and spoils a few less plot points than the previous one. It’s definitely the last trailer I’ll watch for Southpaw before sitting down to see the full film on July 24th.

I grew up in Hamburg to a German father and Ecuadorian mother. Obsessive student of film, Hip-Hop, and stand-up comedy. I love the dark dreambox that is the cinema auditorium. I love mountains and the ocean, but am equally exhilarated by the jungle of the city. I hope to one day create something that hits someone in the brain with thunderous effect.
