SPIDER-MAN: Andrew Garfield Out, Marvel Producing New Films, MCU Release Dates Changed

Spider Man Marvel Cinematic Universe

Spider-Man to Be a Part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After a decade of speculation, fans can finally rejoice as Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios have finally reached an agreement for Spider-Man to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Marvel made the announcement Monday night saying that they will have a new Spider-Man appearing in a MCU film before having the web-slinger get his own solo film. As a result, Sony Pictures will release the next installment of the Spider-Man franchise on July 28, 2017. The upcoming film will be co-produced by Marvel Entertainment CEO Kevin Feige and Sony Pictures Chairwoman Amy Pascal, who was part of the franchise’s launch 13 years ago. These two media giants will join forces to give a fresh take for Spider-Man with Sony Pictures continuing to finance, distribute, own and have final creative control over the $4 billion franchise.

This new venture allows Marvel and Sony to explore ways for characters from the MCU to integrate into the Spider-Man films. It has been on everyone’s minds about whether the web-slinger would be part of the Marvel Universe since he is known for being an important part of the Marvel comic book universe. With this new deal, fans can finally experience Spider-Man as he fights side-by-side with other heroes from the MCU.

Walt Disney Company’s CEO Bob Iger had this to say about the new relationship:

Spider-Man is one of Marvel’s great characters, beloved around the world. We’re thrilled to work with Sony Pictures to bring the iconic web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which opens up fantastic new opportunities for storytelling and franchise building.

“We always want to collaborate with the best and most successful filmmakers to grow our franchises and develop our characters. Marvel, Kevin Feige and Amy, who helped orchestrate this deal, are the perfect team to help produce the next chapter of Spider-Man,” said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment. “This is the right decision for the franchise, for our business, for Marvel, and for the fans.”

“Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios share a love for the characters in the Spider-Man universe and have a long, successful history of working together. This new level of collaboration is the perfect way to take Peter Parker’s story into the future,” added Doug Belgrad, president, Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group.

“I am thrilled to team with my friends at Sony Pictures along with Amy Pascal to produce the next Spider-Man movie,” said Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. He also added:

Amy has been deeply involved in the realization on film of one of the world’s most beloved characters. Marvel’s involvement will hopefully deliver the creative continuity and authenticity that fans demand from the MCU. I am equally excited for the opportunity to have Spider-Man appear in the MCU, something which both we at Marvel, and fans alike, have been looking forward to for years.

So with a new Spider-Man film to be made, what will happen to the Amazing Spider-Man films including their spin-offs? Well according to Slashfilm, it appears that Andrew Garfield won’t play Peter Parker in the MCU with the spin-off Sinister Six being delayed. However, longtime Spider-Man producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will become executive producers for the new films.

Also as a result of this new deal, some films in the MCU have been pushed to give Spider-Man a chance to appear in a solo film. Thor: Ragnarok, will move from July 28 to November 3, 2017 while Black Panther gets moved from that spot to July 6, 2018. With those two films on the move, Captain Marvel will move to November 2, 2018 while Inhumans comes out the following year on July 12, 2019.

But before Spider-Man goes on his own adventure, where will Spider-Man appear in the MCU? Perhaps the web-slinger wouldn’t mind appearing in Captain America: Civil War? It seems to be the right choice for Marvel to introduce the character. What do you guys think? Are you guys excited for Spider-Man to be part of the MCU?
