Jon Favreau To Write and Executive Produce Live-Action Star Wars TV Series

Jon Favreau has been selected to write and executive produce a live-action Star Wars TV series. Disney is making sure that their direct-to-consumer streaming service hits the ground running at a sprint. Disney’s streaming service doesn’t premiere until late 2019 but now it has something exclusive that fans of Star Wars will be aching to see. The newly-announced Star Wars TV series will also be a chief sells point for the Disney streaming service – sign up for the Disney streaming service and get the live-action Star Wars TV show.

This was a brilliant move by Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy. Whether this was in the works for some months (I am guessing that it was) or happened in the last few weeks, it changes the lingering Star Wars headline – the quality and critical reception of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The David Benioff and D.B. Weiss Star Wars announcement had the same effect.

Kathleen Kennedy had this to say about Favreau writing and executive producing a live-action Star Wars TV series:

“I couldn’t be more excited about Jon coming on board to produce and write for the new direct-to-consumer platform. Jon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe. This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base.”

For his part, Jon Favreau, as one would expect, is excited about the opportunity to get behind the cameras of Star Wars:

“If you told me at 11 years old that I would be getting to tell stories in the Star Wars universe, I wouldn’t have believed you. I can’t wait to embark upon this exciting adventure.”

There is no word yet on where this TV series will fit into the Star Wars universe but there is a lot of fertile ground to be plowed: The Old Republic, Obi Wan’s past, what happened to the clones after The Clone War (and their creators), et cetera. Will the live-action TV series be a canon story or a completely new storyline like the new Star Wars films? Because of the latter, its doubtful that the live-action series (if set after the new trilogy) will follow canon i.e. the official novels written after Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.
