STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS (2015): Darth Punk: The Funk Awakens

Darth Punk: The Funk Awakens

Star Wars: The Force Awakens gets Daft Punk tribute music video treatment. If the YouTube generation taught us anything (besides cats ruling the interwebs, retro bad is ironically good, and webcam meltdowns/ phone-cam fails are the new 15 minutes – even as Trolls make you pay dearly for it), it’s that fans can be a force for ingenious, complimentary constructiveness. In other words: fans have come a long way, from just ranting about their favs, and fan made media can now be held to high enough standards to stand on their own.

In the post-Avengers geekdom era, I’ve seen quite a few good examples (like fan made Black Panther magazine mock-ups, and Rule63 Captain America); the latest coming from an outfit called InfectiousDesigner, that not only pays homage to Star Wars – by way of The Force Awakens – but also electro-dance fan fav Daft Punk. Darth Punk: The Force Awakens would be as logical an outcome as any. InfectiousDesigner describes that outcome as:

“One day Vader and Fett will recruit for the the dark side, disguised as an electronic music duo… they will be arresting ears and administering intergalactic rhythm and beats. The Rebels won’t stand a chance.”

I think the video better speaks for itself. I did take the liberty of combining a teaser, the original release, and a prequel, for smoother viewing (and so I wouldn’t have to upload each one, separately); but I also included a BTS video, and a link to the originals, via ID’s Youtube page.

While the finished product doesn’t live up to Daft Punk’s music, it is a music video (so don’t hang on the plot too much), the production values are about as good as fan-made gets, and the concept can be mined for miles. Personally, I’m hoping for more.

P.S. If anyone asks (sternly) about my editing: it was a fan-made of a fan-made….
