STATEN ISLAND SUMMER (2015) Movie Trailer: SNL-Produced Coming-of-Age Movie Hits Netflix

Staten Island Summer Trailer

Staten Island Summer Movie Trailer. Rhys Thomas‘ Staten Island Summer (2015) movie trailer stars Ashley Greene, Brett Azar, Kate Walsh, and Gina Gershon. State Island Summer‘s plot synopsis: “Pals Danny and Frank spend the summer after high school working as lifeguards while figuring out their future.”

I know all the “old” faces in this trailer, and recognize virtually none of the younger talent. This is a generation I am too quickly slipping away from, and you know what? That’s ok. I didn’t find any particular joke here hilarious, didn’t laugh out loud, or even chuckle whilst watching this trailer. That doesn’t mean it looks barren of any merit, on the contrary – I’m a sucker for coming-of-age stories and high-school-lets-party movies, and this looks to at least attempt a crossover of Superbad and Adventureland. I really doubt this will reach any of the peaks of either of those movies, but I’m glad they’re trying.

Sadly, the way this is shot, the lighting, some of the acting – it all feels very TV. The choice to release this through Netflix, then, is making complete sense. This seems like a movie most average tv viewers will watch while sitting on their couch, laughing at middling comedy and mediocre writing. Have a look for yourself? Is this stuff funny? I can’t tell.

Rhys Thomas has also cast Jim Gaffigan, Bobby Moynihan, Method Man, and Fred Armisen.

I grew up in Hamburg to a German father and Ecuadorian mother. Obsessive student of film, Hip-Hop, and stand-up comedy. I love the dark dreambox that is the cinema auditorium. I love mountains and the ocean, but am equally exhilarated by the jungle of the city. I hope to one day create something that hits someone in the brain with thunderous effect.
