Superhero and Critically Acclaimed The CW Series Come to Netflix

All of The CW‘s current roster of TV shows, including TV series that are premiering this season, will now be available on Netflix. All of The CW’s Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, iZombie, there new TV series: Frequency, No Tomorrow, and Riverdale, and his drama series The 100, Jane The Virgin, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Reign, Supernatural, The Originals, and The Vampire Diaries.

The first streaming deal between The CW and Netflix was established in 2011. The new deal extends across multiple year. The new deal makes Netflix the exclusive online stream outlet for The CW’s programming. “Starting with the 2016-2017 season, Netflix members will be able to stream full seasons for each of these programs beginning eight days after each show’s season finale.”

One wonders why The CW does not develop its own streaming service like HBO and Showtime have developed. This would be an additional revenue stream for The CW. I understand that Netflix probably gave The CW a great deal and that Netflix has an entire distribution apparatus in-place already but streaming is the future. That future is here, now, and already in use. At some point The CW is going to have to embrace that fact. Why The CW doesn’t invest the money and create their own streaming service is a mystery. Perhaps they do not have the funds to at this point. They have CW Seed though. Why not use that service to stream their primetime programming?

The official announcement about the new deal between The CW and Netflix:

BEVERLY HILLS, CALIF. – July 5, 2016 – Netflix, the world’s leading Internet television network, and The CW Network, a joint venture between CBS Corporation and Warner Bros. Entertainment, announced today a new multi-year content licensing relationship that allows Netflix [Nasdaq: NFLX] to remain the exclusive U.S. subscription television service for previous seasons of scripted series broadcast on The CW.

The new relationship spans all current CW series, as well as all future programs produced for the network during the term of the new agreement, which begins with the just-completed 2015-2016 broadcast season. Starting with the 2016-2017 season, Netflix members will be able to stream full seasons for each of these programs beginning eight days after each show’s season finale.

Programming available to Netflix members will include the three new series on The CW’s 2016-2017 primetime schedule: FREQUENCY, NO TOMORROW and RIVERDALE; the hit DC series LEGENDS OF TOMORROW and SUPERGIRL, which will join ARROW and FLASH; and the network’s critically acclaimed JANE THE VIRGIN and CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND, featuring the Golden Globe-winning performances of Gina Rodriguez and Rachel Bloom, respectively. The roster will also continue to include fan favorites such as THE VAMPIRE DIARIES and series THE 100, IZOMBIE, THE ORIGINALS and REIGN.
