THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON (2015): Cobie Smulders Returns for Sequel

Cobie Smulders Maria Hill

Cobie Smulders will reprise her role as Maria Hill in The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Smulders already has a rock solid place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and now the question is how her character will develop from here on. Will she follow in the unfortunate steps of Agent Coulson or not?

Cobie Smulders made a good impression in The Avengers, she then took part in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and she is set to portray Maria Hill also in Captain America: The Winger Soldier (2014), the trailer of which is probably the best that Marvel has ever released. Now she is coming back for the second Avengers film. If there is a problem with Maria Hill it is the fact that she is a secondary character and as such it is quite possible that we see her getting killed off at some point. We know for sure that she is going to make it until The Avengers: Age of Ultron but what are the chances that she survives James Spader’s Ultron?

We all know that one of Marvel’s main dramatic levers is the death or the apparent death of supporting characters. Coulson died in The Avengers, Thor’s mother died in Thor: The Dark World along with another death which I wouldn’t mention because it would spoil the film, James Barnes died in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), etc. It would be extremely fortunate if Marvel tries to come up with a more creative manner of sparking off dramatic tension so that we can keep Cobie Smulder’s beautiful, highly-trained, smart character for more than just two films.

Cobie Smulders herself is not worried about her future in the franchise. It is quite the opposite-she is extremely excited about the upcoming Joss Whedon-directed sequel not only because two new superheroes will be introduced but also because she is not aware of the full details of her character in the story. Hopefully, she won’t be disappointed when the details are revealed to her.
