The Following centers on former FBI agent Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) and his attempts to recapture serial killer Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) following the latter’s escape from prison. Hardy soon discovers that the charismatic Carroll has surrounded himself with a group of like-minded individuals (which he met while teaching and while in prison), and turned them into a cult of fanatical killers. When Carroll’s son Joey (Kyle Catlett) is abducted by his father’s followers, the FBI discovers that it is the first step in a wider plan for Carroll to escape custody, humiliate Hardy, and murder Carroll’s ex-wife Claire (Natalie Zea)

The New York Comic Con 2013 panel for The Following:

Guests included, Executive Producer Marcos Siega, Kevin Bacon, Valorie Curry, Shawn Ashmore, Connie Nielsen, and James Purefoy.

*New female character, Lily Gray (played by Nielsen), will be introduced in season 2 as the new love interest to Ryan Hardy. At the panel she was defined as little as possible but is said to be the opposite of Hardy’s characters. In a typical romance – “Opposites attract” – she is an art dealer who lives in Soho. She’s a beautiful woman, well put together, and a polygraph. She lives in many places. She also hides a dark secret and needs Hardy’s help.
*Siega explain that the new season is set one year in the future. Hardy has given up alcohol, is working out, and is in a good place. Metaphorically his heart has healed and he’s beginning to deal with the idea of letting someone in.
*Michael however, is describes as being “in the same place as Ryan Hardy one year earlier.” He is mentally coming apart. Michael as a character will be trying to find strength where he can.
*The second season will focus on the relationship between Hardy and Michael, who both must deal with the murder they committed in the first season.
*Nothing was confirmed, but there were rumors that Emma (Curry) would take up the mantle for her fallen mentor. It’s unclear what Emma truly wants, but a new Emma will be explored in the upcoming season.
*There will be a “new face of evil” in this Second Season.
*The executive producers talked about the new level of dark horror in the new season. While they want to push the envelope they recognize that the audience “[has] to care about what they’re watching.”

The New York Comic Con 2013 panel footage for The Following:

Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) returns home with a bag of Chinese takeout. He turns around and finds himself stabbed twice in the stomach. He collapses to the ground and sees Claire appear in the doorway after smelling the food. She rushes to his side in horror. Claire is then stabbed in the back. Her assailant then stabs in the chest, which propels Hardy into a fit of rage; Hardy chokes her, smashes her head into the floor, and then snaps her neck.

The two are rushed to the hospital and between the chaos, Hardy looks to Claire, desperate to make sure she is okay. When Hardy wakes up in his hospital bed he sees Michael in the doorway. When he asks about Claire, Michael can say nothing but shake his head in “no”, indicating that Claire has died. Hardy begins to cry and shake in his bed and Michael rushes to him, placing his hands over Hardy’s eyes.
