THE GET DOWN (2016) TV Show Trailer: Baz Luhrman’s Hip-Hop Show [Netflix]

The Get Down

The Get Down Trailer. Netflix‘s The Get Down (2016) TV show trailer stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen IIMamoudou Athie and Skylan BrooksThe Get Down‘s plot synopsis: “A rag tag group of teenagers run wild in the streets of the Bronx in the late 70’s.”

Who would’ve thought? Baz Luhrman made a show about the birth of Hip-Hop, a sub-culture that grew from creative youth, celebrating dance, bragging and boasting, coloring the neighborhood walls, b-boys and fly-girls pea-cocking into the 21st century.

For me, Hip-Hop is everything. I was a teenager at the dawn of the millennium, and though that was already far removed from the late 1980s whence this beautiful lifestyle came into birth, I felt like my time was the best time. Mini-disc players, baggie pants, skating after school, graffiti at night, writing rhymes, dreaming up group names, school dances, a run in with police or two, etc. I felt alive, constantly excited, restless, and as though I were on the verge of glory.

This trailer really seems to portray sentiments like that, and dare I say, it looks pretty good. There’s some family/friend trouble toward the end of the trailer, that really seems to tell us that this isn’t just all fun and games. This will be…a little more complex. An honest coming-of-age story. If that is played out thoroughly, and effectively over the course of an entire Netflix season – I’m down.

Take a look at the trailer below.

The Get Down also stars Tremaine Brown Jr.Giancarlo EspositoHerizen F. GuardiolaShameik Moore and Justice Smith.

I grew up in Hamburg to a German father and Ecuadorian mother. Obsessive student of film, Hip-Hop, and stand-up comedy. I love the dark dreambox that is the cinema auditorium. I love mountains and the ocean, but am equally exhilarated by the jungle of the city. I hope to one day create something that hits someone in the brain with thunderous effect.
