Katniss and her family live in District 12, one of the poorest districts in the fictional nation of Panem, formerly the United States. District 12 was a coal-mining district, located in Appalachia. In the novel “The Hunger Games”, the 13 districts had rebelled against the capital approximately 75 years previously, and had been crushed. In retaliation, District 13 had been destroyed, and the annual Hunger Games had been instituted. In the Games, 1 male and 1 female between the ages of 12 and 18 were selected annually from each district and were known as tributes. The tributes were transported to an arena, where they would fight to the death, with the last surviving tribute as the victor. The annual selection was known as the Reaping, and the day of the annual lottery was called Reaping Day. As further punishment for the districts, Reaping Day was regarded as a national holiday and watching the Reaping and the Games themselves was mandatory.

Gary RossThe Hunger Games plot synopsis:

In the remains of North America lies the country of Panem, where there are 12 districts that must choose one girl and one boy between the ages of 12 to 18 to compete in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death in an arena on live television as punishment for the ‘Dark Days’ when the 12 districts rebelled together against the country’s government, the Capitol. When 16 year old Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) volunteers to takes her sister Prim’s (Willow Shields) place in the Games, she will leave behind her family and her friend Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth), meet her fellow tribute Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson), and be pitted against other tributes from fellow districts who have trained for this their whole life. Katniss must try her hardest to do the unthinkable—win the Hunger Games.

Regarding Jennifer Lawrence transformation into Katniss Everdeen:

The blonde-haired blue-eyed Lawrence has been transformed to play Katniss, who is described in the books as having olive skin and dark hair; it’s unclear if Lawrence is wearing contacts, but her eyes certainly look darker in the photo. She also looks even thinner than her normal Hollywood starlet self, at least in her face– it’s important that Katniss be thin, since the character has grown up poor and fighting for every meal, so this is one instance of a female star slimming down that actually makes a lot of sense. Her costume may be the biggest selling point for fans though– she’s wearing the gold Mockingjay pin that she wears during the Games, and is sporting the bow and arrow that’s her best and most deadly weapon. The bow and arrow look really shiny, which suggests it’s the set that Katniss picks up during the Games, and not the bow she used to hunt to feed her family while growing up in dirt-poor District 12.

The Hunger Games also stars Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy, Willow Shields as Primrose Everdeen, Paula Malcomson as Mrs. Everdeen, Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket, Wes Bentley as Seneca Crane, Stanley Tucci as Caesar Flickerman, Amandla Stenberg as Rue (District 11), Dayo Okeniyi as Thresh (District 11), Alexander Ludwig as Cato (District 2), Isabelle Fuhrman as Clove (District 2), Jack Quaid as Marvel (District 1), Leven Rambin as Glimmer (District 1), Jacqueline Emerson as Foxface (District 5), and Ian Nelson as (District 3) Tribute Boy. Look at the first photos of Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeenon in the May 2011 issue of Entertainment Weekly below and leave your thoughts on them.
