Ed Helms cast in The Naked Gun Reboot. The casting of Ed Helms answers the question of who will play the lead role in the remake film. Ed Helms will portray Detective Frank Drebin, a part previously played by the late Leslie Nielson. There is no word on any other cast members or a director yet.

[Paramount Pictures] has tapped the scripting team of Thomas Lennon and R. Ben Garant…to write the screenplay as a new spin on the Drebin character.

On the original films:

The Naked Gun is a series of American crime comedy films created by Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker. All three films are based on their earlier short-lived ABC television series Police Squad!, which was cancelled after six episodes.

Paramount released “The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!” in 1988 with Nielsen battling Ricardo Montalban’s character plotting to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II at a baseball game in Los Angeles. Sequels “The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear” and “Naked Gun 33½: The Final Insult” followed in 1991 and 1994; the three films cumed $275 million.
