THE OUTSIDER: Jared Leto To Star

Jared Leto

The Outsider to feature Jared Leto. The Academy Award-winning Dallas Book Buyer’s Club actor will headline the planned action-thriller from Waypoint Entertainment and Linson Entertainment.

The film will be only the second film Leto has acted in since his critically-acclaimed turn in Book Buyer’s Club back in 2013. The only other film he has participated in since then, Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad, is set for release on August 5th after having been pushed back several times.

In contrast to the antics of Suicide Squad, the little that has been made public about The Outsider suggests it will be another heavy role for Leto. Directed by Land of Mine‘s Martin Zandvliet, the movie will focus on the travails of an American POW Japan shortly after World War II. The American, played by Leto, will find himself pursued and threatened by the dreaded Yakuza:

With a screenplay penned by Andrew Baldwin (Bastille Day), principal photography is currently set to begin this fall. Set in post-WWII Japan, The Outsider tells the story of an imprisoned American soldier (Leto) who is released with the help of his Yakuza cellmate. Now free, he sets out to earn their respect and repay his debt while navigating the dangerous criminal underworld.

The Outsider will mark Zandvliet’s English-language debut following the success of Land of Mine, which was lauded at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival and acquired by Sony Pictures as a potential awards film this year.
