THE SOUND AND FURY (2015) Movie Trailer: James Franco Does Faulkner, Again

The Sound And Fury Movie Trailer. James Franco‘s The Sound And Fury (2015) movie trailer stars James Franco, Seth Rogen and Tim Blake Nelson. The Sound And Fury‘s plot synopsis: “A look at the trials and tribulations of The Compson siblings, living in the deep south during the early part of the 20th century.”

James Franco is a prolific student and artist, regardless of your opinion of him. He’s been working as an actor for decades, studying various disciplines and snatching up degrees from multiple institutions, and has begun directing his own feature films. This is his second adaptation of a William Faulkner novel, and as I have neither read the two books nor seen Franco’s previous iteration, As I Lay Dying (2013), I can neither vouch for nor dismiss his efforts, regarding the quality of a James Franco/William Faulkner ‘collaboration’.

What I can say is that this trailer seems to present us with a decently crafted film. The cinematography is solid, the cast is too, and even though this sometimes looks like a BBC TV film or something of that ilk, the material and acting may elevate everything around it. I’m not sure. Here’s hoping that Franco knows what he’s doing, and has been growing as an artist/director in the past few years.

According to Slashfilm, “Say what you will about Franco, but you can’t fault him for lacking ambition. Not only is The Sound and the Fury a revered American classic, it’s also the kind of novel that inspires people to throw around words like ‘unfilmable.’ But Franco apparently heard that description and took it as a challenge. It may help that this is his second time directing Faulkner, after 2013’s As I Lay Dying.

That said, reviews for The Sound and the Fury out of Toronto were not so great. And I cannot possibly be the only person who saw Franco’s flailing, prosthetic-toothed performance in the trailer and immediately thought of Robert Downey Jr.’s immortal advice in Tropic Thunder, right?”
