THE WALKING DEAD gets Season 4 by AMC, loses showrunner Glen Mazzara

Glen Mazzara The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead gets Season 4, loses Glen Mazzara. The AMC TV network has renewed The Walking Dead for a full forth season but has lost its current showrunner Glen Mazzara. This news is both expected and unexpected. The renewal news was expected because The Walking Dead “garnered AMC’s highest-ever ratings for a pilot” and the “midseason finale on December 2 [, 2012] drew 10.5 million viewers, solidifying its position as one of television’s best-performing series.”

Glen Mazzara’s departure was unexpected because of this success but this is not the first time The Walking Dead has lost a show runner. After its first season, The Walking Dead lost its showrunner and partial creator Frank Darabont (Darabont’s exit…came after months of bitter, sometimes public dispute between him and the network. Reports about Darabont’s firing painted a picture of budget woes and anxious cast and crew). Glen Mazzara is stepping down from his showrunner duties at the conclusion of season three.

In a joint statement (AMC and Mazzara) about his departure from the show, Glen Mazzara was vague about his exit reasons:

Glen guided the series creatively for seasons 2 and 3. AMC is grateful for his hard work. We are both proud of our shared success. Both parties acknowledge that there is a difference of opinion about where the show should go moving forward, and conclude that it is best to part ways. This decision is amicable and Glen will remain on for post-production on season 3B as showrunner and executive producer.

I watched Mazzara on Talking Dead a few times. He seemed cool and was very passionate about the show. I wonder who will replace him.
