THE WALKING DEAD: Negan as the New AMC Big Bad?

Negan

Arch villain wanted for AMC‘s The Walking Dead. With The Governor character killed off halfway through the show’s fourth season, a somewhat sizable vacuum has been left regarding a series antagonist. One clear contender would be Negan, the character considered the source material successor to that role. He has been something of a polarizing figure to fans, however, generating some resistance to the idea; but creator Robert Kirkman cited the comic’s timeline as another factor to consider.

Robert Kirkman on Negan’s prospects:

“Well, there was a lot of breathing room in the comics between them. Whether or not we have the same amount of breathing room, or if we do cut that down a little bit and bring him into the show a little early remains to be seen. But I definitely do think there needs to be some kind of space from a Governor into a Negan. You have to have something of a break in there. So I wouldn’t expect him to be showing up — definitely not in season 4. I don’t know. I wouldn’t expect it too soon. But we are all very excited about the prospect of bringing that guy into the show. The plan is that we will see him eventually.”

To Kirkman’s point, a certain amount of groundwork would likely be necessary before a new camp rivalry could get rolling. With the cast left scattered, at the end of the mid-season finale, it may be some time before conditions allow for Negan’s future entry – if at all.

About the character Negan:

Negan is the leader of a group of hardened men with their campsite based at an abandoned factory (the latter being labeled ‘Sanctuary). Most of the women, including some of the men’s former girlfriends/wives, are kept at the Sanctuary campsite enslaved and used as sex toys primarily for Negan himself.

He is feared and respected as a king, yet his characteristics cannot be dubbed exactly evil. While he can of course be unmerciful and relentless when it comes to getting a point across, at the same time he is understanding of others and willing to spare those he sees as potential good use. He also shows to be quite reasonable when people attempt to negotiate with him, and detests rape.

Despite these things however, Negan, still has a habit of provocation and playing power games.
Negan and his men continually hounded other communities for months, using fear and the threat of violence to get rations of their supplies (including food and ammunition).

The Walking Dead returns to AMC on Sunday, February 9, 2014.
