THE WALKING DEAD: Season 6 Images of New Cast in Character [AMC]

The Walking Dead Heath

AMC’s The Walking Dead season 6 TV show images formally introduce new characters. The Walking Dead has made it to the Alexandria Safe Zone – the current & longest lasting sanctuary of the source characters. Whatever the TV series makes of the source material, the Alexandria arc guarantees the show a steady supply of extra characters – destined to be cast members, casualties, and both.

Three cast additions have been previously announced, at SDCC; but we can now connect the actors to the source characters they will be bringing to the small screen. Mostly, anyway; as one of the three will be more of a composite, than a specific source character. Entertainment Weekly has provided the following episode stills, each featuring a new cast member in character.

Merritt Wever (Nurse Jackie) will be playing Denise Cloyd, Doctor for the Alexandria Safe Zone (the Doctor, after Pete was put down). Denise’s role, in the source material, was a mixture of heroic & tragic; but, given the show’s track record (and the popularity of Weaver’s Nurse Jackie character), there may be more than enough room for the showrunners to run with the character.

Corey Hawkins (Straight Outta Compton) will play Heath, an Alexandrian scout & supply runner. The source character took on Glenn as a replacement partner, and was romantically linked to Denise Cloyd. While the buddy cop dynamic, with Glenn (Steven Yeun) is likely to appeal to showrunners, it’s anybody’s guess whether the Heath-Denise relationship will carry over. The source character also had some reservations about Rick Grimes, however, and plays a role in a power play by Nicholas. This would fit with both the previous season’s Nicholas (Michael Traynor)-Glenn feud, and the ongoing power struggle theme, between Rick (Andrew Lincoln) & the Townies, suggested by the recent season 6 trailer.

The wildcard, of the three, will be Ethan Embry’s Carter. Embry (Grace & Frankie), according to showrunner Scott M. Gimple, will be a composite of characters they (the showrunners) simply had not gotten around to, or brought out of others already introduced. Some eagle eyes may actually recognize him from the season 6 trailer, where he was made out to be one of the principal challengers to Rick’s authority.

If Carter doesn’t turn out to be Rick’s immediate headache, then the trailer strongly suggests that new regular, Morgan (Lennie James), will be. I have my doubts. Scott Gimple, himself, warned that you shouldn’t trust everything you see; since “We sometimes play with the truth in trailers,” and “Rick is absolutely faced with challenges with way he does things… Things may not be what they seem.”

So the first batch of fresh meat has been delivered. Get a good look – as more come in, some you’re gonna love, some you’re gonna hate; some you’re gonna miss, some you’re just gonna get sick of.

The Walking Dead, season 6, also features Chandler Riggs, Danai Gurira, Melissa McBride, Sonequa Martin-Green, Lauren Cohan, Norman Reedus, Seth Gilliam, Michael Cudlitz, Josh McDermitt, Alanna Masterson, Christian Serratos, Tovah Feldshuh, Ross Marquand, Alexandra Breckenridge, and Austin Abrams. The new season kicks off on Sunday October 11, at 9:00 pm EST, on AMC.
