This Week on DVD / Blu-ray: July 16, 2013: 42, EVIL DEAD, REGULAR SHOW

Chadwick Boseman 42

Notable releases for today, July 16, 2013, include: Evil Dead, Regular Show: the Complete First and Second Seasons, and Shark Week: Fins of Fury. The long-awaited Jackie Robinson biopic, 42, hits the shelves today. The film stars Chadwick Boseman, Harrison Ford, Alan Tudyk, Christopher Meloni, Lucas Black, John C. McGinley, and is directed by Brian Helgeland. The dynamic tale follows Jackie Robinson’s life up through his historic signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers under Branch Rickey

Prior to Robinson’s home run smashing through the color barrier, Major League Baseball adhered to a strict white’s only rule, turning away countless talented African Americans from its ranks. Robinson’s determination carried with it the hopes and fears of an entire people; he endured institutionalized racism as well as personal attacks. 42 does an excellent job of recreating that period both in set and costuming. The Blu-ray combo pack includes a Blu-ray, DVD, UltraViolet Copy, and Digital Copy packaged in a slipcover in original pressing for $35.99; the DVD + UltraViolet set has an SRP of $28.98.
