TOMORROW, WHEN THE WAR BEGAN 2 (2012): Cities Fight for Production

Phoebe Tonkin, Tomorrow, When the War Began, 2010

Tomorrow, When the War Began 2 (2012)’s, the sequel to Tomorrow, When the War Began, production location has not been settled. Writer/director Stuart Beattie from Tomorrow, When the War Began is supposedly returning (written about here: I, Frankenstein’s Stuart Beattie delays Tomorrow, When the War Began (2012)) as are cast members Caitlin Stasey, Phoebe Tonkin, Deniz Akdeniz, Ashleigh Cummings, Chris Pang, and Andrew Ryan. We previously wrote about the film moving forward here: Tomorrow, When the War Began 2 (2012): Sequel Moving Ahead.

 From The Herald:

The NSW Government says it will fight to keep production of Tomorrow When The War Began 2 in the Hunter after reports the Gold Coast was trying to lure the movie sequel to Queensland.

On the original film, Tomorrow, When the War Began:

The $27 million action movie was shot around the Hunter in 2009, with Raymond Terrace, Dungog and Maitland providing backdrops…the film brought $2.9million and 230 jobs to the region during 43 days of shooting.

On the sequel, Tomorrow, When the War Began 2:

Former NSW premier Kristina Keneally announced before Labor’s March election loss that Tomorrow 2 would be filmed in the Hunter from September.

The second movie’s bigger budget would add $5million to the region economy, generating 450 jobs, including cast, crew and extras.

Screen Hunter Central Coast manager Annette Hubber said that Tomorrow production company Omnilab Media had not advised if the sequel would begin filming in September as planned.

Production plans have reportedly been complicated by the first film’s disappointing box office takings overseas and writer-director Stuart Beattie signing to direct his first US film, I, Frankenstein later this year.

What do you think of this quarrel? Who do you think should receive the production of Tomorrow, When the War Began 2? Personally, I think it should go to the location with the most depressed economy. For more Tomorrow, When the War Began 2 photos, videos, and information, check out our Tomorrow, When the War Began Page. Tomorrow, When the War Began 2 has no US release date yet.

  • I am from QLD but I really want to see TWTWB2 produced in NSW. Changing any scenary in the movie will have a massive negative impact for how realistic people see the movie. However if the series continues to be made into movies, why not share scenery if possible. There are parts later in the book where there is a big change from the original place TWTWB starts out.

  • The production should do whatever is best for the film. That being said, I would choose the locale that needs the revenue the most but if NSW was good to them the first time, why not go back?

  • They need to keep the sciences in hell at the same place in order for the movie to make since so pick the place closes to that and closes to the allreddy picks secession from the last movie.
