TRON 3: Third Franchise Film Cancelled by Walt Disney Pictures

Disney has cancelled TRON 3. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures has officially cancelled development of TRON 3. No further development on film is expected. Although casting had apparently taken place and a writer and director had been assigned, TRON 3 is not moving forward.

There is not official word as to why this occurred. My speculation is that there was not a need for Disney to move forward on TRON 3 with the Marvel Cinematic Universe and now the Star Wars Cinematic Universe both about too churn out films on a yearly basis. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures has films that they know are going to perform. TRON 3 was a risk and mitigating risk to the point of non-existence is a movie producer and movie financier’s bread and butter.

Another factor in the cancellation decision may have been that TRON: Legacy was not  the blockbuster Disney had been expecting. Via Deadline, “Global earnings were just shy of $400 million, but Tron:Legacy had a roughly $180 million budget (and likely a similar amount was spent on marketing).”

For whatever reason, the film is now officially dead.
