TRUTH (2015) Movie Trailer: Robert Redford is Dan Rather

Truth Trailer. James Vanderbilt‘s Truth (2015) movie trailer stars Robert Redford, Cate Blanchett, Topher Grace and Elisabeth Moss. Truth‘s plot synopsis: “Newsroom drama detailing the 2004 CBS 60 Minutes report investigating then-President George W. Bush’s military service, and the subsequent firestorm of criticism that cost anchor Dan Rather and producer Mary Mapes their careers.”

In the post-Wikileaks, post-Snowden era, the whole chessboard has changed. Heroes have become traitors, information has become digitized, replicated immediately throughout the world. It’s interesting to see a film like this, as contrast, where newsmen were newsmen. A news segment was carefully researched, prepared, produced, and presented to the world at a regular time – a nightly appointment with ones television was a communal experience. This is all different now.

Regarding the cast and crew, I’m watching this film regardless of its critical reviews or popular consensus. This is Robert Redford and Cate Blanchett starring in a political drama/thriller written by James Vanderbilt – the man who wrote the screenplay to David Fincher‘s unheralded masterpiece, Zodiac (2007). To be completely truthful here, he also wrote The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), so who knows.

According to Slashfilm, “The film made its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival just a couple of weeks ago, to pretty good reviews. Variety, for example, wrote, ‘The keenly focused intelligence and low-boil intensity that James Vanderbilt demonstrated in his screenplay for Zodiac are on impressive display in Truth.’

And even if ‘you can’t avoid the fact Robert Redford is just doing Robert Redford as Dan Rather,’ as HitFix put it, Blanchett’s performance as Mapes is getting a lot of praise. ‘Just two years after winning an Oscar for Woody Allen’sBlue Jasmine, Blanchett gives an even more memorable performance as Mapes,’ gushed Coming Soon.”
