TV Review: CALIFORNICATION: Season 4, Ep. 7: The Recused

Evan Handler, Pamela Adlon, Stephen Tobolowsky, Californication

Californication, season 4, episode 7 – entitled The Recused – was a dilapidated attempt on Karen (Natascha McElhone)’s part to move on from Hank (David Duchovny) but he is not making it easy. Nor would the viewer expect him to since he consideres Karen to be his soul mate. The difference between the Seaon 4 Hank and Season 1 Hank are subtle but they are there. He won’t admit it but he knows Karen moving on is the natural reaction to the constant disappointments he has bestowed upon her. He covers up this knowledge with jokes but Hank is too smart not to recognize that truth.

Hanks’ shenanigans on the golf course were hilarious. He has no decorum or repect for his surroundings once so ever, not that he ever has or respects himself or others.

Charlie (Evan Handler) still loves his now ex-wife, cares for her and Marcy (Pamela Adlon) knows it though she doesn’t want to be with him anymore. This was a growth episode from the two main characters in Californication and possibly the beginning of something between Karen and Ben (Michael Ealy).
