TV Review: IZOMBIE: Season 2, Episode 16: Pour Some Sugar, Zombie [The CW]

The CW’s iZombie Pour Some Sugar, Zombie TV Show Review. iZombie: Season 2, Episode 16: Pour Some Sugar, Zombie had both some excellent storytelling and a good dose of comedy. The episode also brought in some big revelations for our characters as the show suddenly starts to shift as we enter the final three episodes of the season. Rose McIver continues to impress us with her versatile acting as she plays around with the different personalities that Liv goes through after chowing down on some brains.

‘Pour Some Sugar, Zombie’ didn’t have much to go on during its murder of the week since it had no connection with the overall arc. The show’s major strength lies on the serialized elements more than the typical procedural aspect of it. This week’s murder was nothing more than another case we see in every episode as the group tries to solve the murder of a stripper. We did get some funny moments with Liv and Peyton (Aly Michalka) when they teamed up to solve the case.  It was great to see more of the friendship that Peyton and Liv share since we don’t get to see much of that on the show.

The format of the show tends to get repetitive, as this episode pretty much shows. With every case, Liv has to be on the victim’s brains most of the time. This ends up overshadowing the real Liv and who she is as a character. This concept works to a point, but it takes away from learning more about what Liv goes through in her daily life as a zombie. We did get to see a bit of her when she talks with Ravi (Rahul Kohli) and when she starts to lose trust in her new boyfriend Drake (Greg Finley). Liv did later find out that her boyfriend is actually an undercover cop, as she learns more about how good a person he is from his mother. The only question is, what will happen to him after Major (Robert Buckley) has taken him away.

However, we did get some great developments with the other characters on the show. The biggest one during the episode was the confrontation between Ravi and Major. We got to see these two roommates become friends and now this big secret that Major is carrying can really ruin their relationship. It will be interesting to see how Major tries to explain to Ravi what he has done, but it appears that their friendship may be beyond repair after Major betrayed Ravi’s trust. Major had a chance to tell him the truth but ended up lying to him.

The big revelation became even more complex with Major suddenly reverting back into a zombie. This was a huge turn for the show, since we never got to see Major in his zombie state. With the cure being temporary, it’s going to be hard for Major to adapt to being a zombie again. The cure also made the zombie state accelerate at a high level, so Major may not have long to stay in control. Perhaps this will bring Liv and Major together once she finds out about what happened.

Another big development was with Blaine (David Anders) when we find out that he has amnesia after taking Ravi’s most recent vaccine. This is an interesting direction that the show is going and it has us intrigued to see where the writers go with this. We get to see David Anders play an entirely different role from his bad boy persona. Seeing him in this state will cause his minions to take over his business, so it will be interesting to see how this all plays out for them with their leader in the fritz.

We also learned the fate of Gilda (Leanne Lapp) as we found out that she has indeed turned into a zombie. Her urges of eating brains have already kicked in, as we saw her go into Liv’s apartment to get some. However, her father has sent in his bodyguard to go after her and make sure that she doesn’t expose his plans. If Gilda gets out of this, maybe she can join Liv’s side in stopping Max Rager from bringing in the impending zombie apocalyse?

Overall, this week’s episode brought in some great drama, as we get closer to the season finale. The storylines this week has started to connect themselves together in ways we haven’t imagined. The big developments is sure to shake things up for the show, especially with how things will turn out between Ravi and Major. This leaves us some questions that we hope get answered when the season ends. There’s so much story left on the show, so here’s hoping that we get some more surprises in the final weeks.
