TV Review: SHAMELESS: Season 3, Episode 8: Where There’s a Will

Shameless Where There’s a Will Review. Shameless: Season 3, Episode 8: Where There’s a Will introduced a major problem facing the Gallaghers then  showcased the resourcefulness of some of its individual members. Where There’s a Will also saw the end of minor situations that had persisted all season and the igniting of others.

Mandy Milkovich (Emma Greenwell) is the girl in the middle who likes a guy, Lip Gallagher (Jeremy Allen White), who is half in and half out of a relationship with her.

The Mandy Shank-a-vich joke was harsh, especially with her willing pitching to help around the Gallagher house even when not asked. The half-ass apology immediately afterward was better than the joke. The hypocrisy during the exchange was amazing: Veronica Fisher (Shanola Hampton) does online porn in her house for pay. How does she look down on a high school student that has sex with guys she likes?

The Mandy and Lip confrontation was one of the best relationship moments in the episode. The one between Kevin Ball (Steve Howey) and his cell phone was a harbinger, a situation that was obvious and inevitable.

To the: “if you don’t want me here question”, Mandy never thought that Lip would actually answer: “yes, I don’t want you here”. It was a harsh scene but a great scene.

Lip is a fool. Lip did exactly what most people would have done: he chose the person he had the most history with over what was right in front of him.

Seeing Jimmy (Justin Chatwin) in the restaurant was an illustration of what he gave up when he dropped out of medical school (a character point I believe I missed up until this point) and what his life could have been like. The look on his face when the blond girl showed up and he could do nothing about it because of Fiona Gallagher (Emmy Rossum) showed how increasing conflicted he is becoming with his relationship and where it is heading. Their relationship can’t led anywhere because of his marriage and it will never led anywhere he truly wants, no matter how much he tries to fit himself into Fiona’a life. The music during the scene drove the point home.

The solution to the house / rent issue was so twisted it could only seem normal in the Gallagher household. No one is appalled, except Jimmy, no is reprimanded. Its conflict resolutions like this that make Shameless such a special show. Like Married With Children, Shameless makes the viewer examine what they have in their lives, take stock of it, and appreciate it that much more.
