TV Review: THE VAMPIRE DIARIES: Season 6, Episode 17: A Bird in a Gilded Cage [The CW]

The CW’s The Vampire Diaries A Bird in a Gilded Cage TV Show Review. The Vampire Diaries: Season 6, Episode 17: A Bird in a Gilded Cage sends Damon (Ian Somehalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) back to the prison world to save his mum while Enzo (Michael Malarkey) and Alaric (Matthew Davis) try to save Caroline (Candice Accola).

I have to admit; Caroline and that new hairdo are pretty hot stuff. Who would have guessed she could be this hot going bad. The issue is, when saying you have lost your humanity and in the next breath you are planning on auditioning for a school play…we have a problem. Caroline’s motivation for going bad…is going bad. When you don’t care you are not concerned about school plays or anything that humans would be caught up with. This doesn’t work for me. She should be out trying to wreak havoc and instead she is showing too much concern for looking like all is normal. Enzo seems to be a bit confused as well. Could it be that hearing what Caroline set up for Sarah Nelson (Tristin Mays) is bothering him? He did go out of his way to bring her from school and recklessly toss her into the mix. Enzo’s motivations are a bit shaky but at least he is showing he has some heart left. His final words to Sarah was a good way to wrap things up. Why didn’t she know her name?

We’re off to see the Wizard…not. When Damon made up his mind that he was going go back and get his mom, Bonnie (Kat Graham) almost killed him while he was trying to ask her to join them. Early on we did not know what deal Damon made that would make Bonnie agree but I knew it would be good. You kind of feel sad for Kai (Chris Wood)…kind of. This poor soul, now sharing a part of Luke Parker, had no idea what was about to hit him. This was so crafty you really just don’t see it coming. Kai should have been more inquisitive about why they had to separate with Damon and Elena. Elena and Damon upon finding Lily Salvatore (Annie Werching) seemed mesmerized. She was very well spoken and answered all of the questions a son would ask still, Damon gives her the cold shoulder. Her agreeing to come back with them to help Stefan comes with a price. Who are these friends of hers in shadow? Such a cool scene, I cannot wait to see how these new players fit on the playing field. We have had and seen just about everything else on the show. The only question now is, did Damon move a bit too hasty bringing his mother back? After all, she did murder over 3,000 people and got herself banished in a prison world. You don’t get that kind of attention unless you are one bad momma.

Alaric and Enzo get the clown award of the month. Yes they were doing a good thing trying to reel Caroline back in. The problem is they were sloppy in how they try to carry it out. I though I was watching an episode of The Three Stooges. Getting her to turn back on her humanity may not work out too well for them. Especially with Enzo not sure what type of pain in the neck he wants to be to Stefan. This duo will need to get their act together. Lets not forget Alaric is human and can be killed.

Hot and heavy…oh yes. After all the pouting and over acting Caroline finally gets to bed Stefan. Great scene. Things look like they are going to stay on tilt for a while. His bedroom antics successfully get Caroline to join him. Could we be seeing Stefan the ripper plus one? A Bonnie and Clyde duo like this could wreak major havoc.

Payback can be a cold dish, a lonely cold dish. In this scenario, Bonnie gets the award and lands one of the smoothest combo moves of the season. She helps Damon get her mother and traps Kai in her prison world. Not bad for a girl who didn’t want to go for that ride. I can’t wait to see what kind of bargaining Kai will do to save his neck from Lilies friends. This should be very interesting.

I thought finding out Alaric and Jo (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe) were expecting a baby was going to be the best surprise scene. I was wrong. Bonnie handing Damon the cure to vampirism was such a great way to close out. These two characters are building a bond that is really fun to watch grow. I guess now Damon is left with mad choices. He has wanted to get this for a while, now he has it in his possession and has Bonnie to thank. He also appears to have a very vulnerable Bonnie as a close ally. We can only hope he makes is next moves carefully.
