TV Review: THE VAMPIRE DIARIES: Season 6, Episode 7: Do You remember the First Time? [The CW]

Marco James Ian Somerhalder The Vampire Diaries

The CW’s The Vampire Diaries Do You Remember the First Time? TV Show Review. The Vampire Diaries: Season 6, Episode 7: Do You Remember the First Time cleverly deals with almost every character’s storylines and could possibly be the best episode yet.

I knew this episode was going to start off with a twist. After Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) teased us into believing they were going to pick back up after her memories were wiped. Damon ends up in the hospital with Jo (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe) and Alaric (Matthew Davis) after getting rejected by Elena. I guess that was another way of saying his heart was crushed.

Things are getting weird in 1994. Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Kai (Chris Wood) pick things up after he had impaled her. I have to admit both of them were pretty calm considering he tried to finish her off last time we saw them. A couple of issues here…we know after Damon tied Kai up…he isn’t a magician and couldn’t get free. She could have tied him up after poking him. That would have at least kept him from coming after her so she could leave. Instead she bought herself enough time to finishing building the device as Kai reappeared. In the end her sending the bear home and hiding her magic was clever. Especially considering Kai’s sister may be part of this plot back in the future. Does Jo know the spell that originally banished him?

From the moment I saw Tripp (Colin Ferguson) kill those vampire as cold as he did I knew he would make a very brutal exit from the show. It was just a matter of time. You can’t go around burning folks up like that without paying…vampires or not. There’s a rule on it somewhere. I was very surprised Stefan (Paul Wesly) and Enzo (Micheal Malarkey) buried the hatchet long enough to keep Tripp as their guest and rough him up. When Caroline (Candice Accola) found out Tripp’s partners had her mother we quickly realize this man had multiple levels of being a pest. Everyone played his or her part very well right up to the point of walking Tripp past the death line. R.I.P. Tripp you kept it interesting but you really shouldn’t have killed Ivy (Emily Chang).

Caroline finally confronting Stefan at the hospital I thought would add some finality to matters but it ended up making things more complicated. I’m not sure why she can’t just tell him she is in love with him instead of beating around the bush. Stefan is really playing it Bogart so we know why she is frustrated. He knows she is in love with him unless he damaged his brain last time Enzo snapped his neck. No one can be that clueless. He just got his brother back and should be in better spirits. Stop torturing this girl already. Give her a thumbs up or a thumbs down on romance already.

Liam meeting Damon was a classic. I’m not sure why Elena allowed the poor boy to get embarrassed like that. She watched as Damon made a fool of him. When he showed up later and put her in check I wanted to high five him. Basically he let Elena know he is not her toy to play with. Now we need to know how far he is prepared to go to find out what’s going on. I hope his curiosity doesn’t lead him down the path Ivy took. Damon is being very friendly…thus far.

The relationship flourishing between Jo and Alaric is a bright point but tainted in complications. I knew this would be an issue when she let him know she was a witch. Now we know why. When Jo revealed such a nasty stab wound everything came crashing into focus. Great reveal! I knew she was hiding something and what a heavy bit to keep secret. Her brother is a murderer and she was one of those he tried to wipe out. I’m sure this is just the beginning of her dealing with her past. Can she get her powers back and bring Bonnie back?

In the final scene of the episode, we follow Damon taking a stroll down memory lane getting drunk. The flashback with him kissing Elena in the rain and making that promise is a great reminder why he is trying so hard to get their relationship back on track. Can’t remember when a kissing scene in the rain wasn’t powerful. To cap it off, finding Bonnie’s teddy bear waiting for him was a great touch. It tells us he actually cares about her and gives viewers hope that she too will come back. If she brings Kai with her things could get very interesting.
