After one year and four months of negotiations, I left because not enough money was offered to do the script the way I felt it needed to be done.

This weekend I started to call actors to let them know I would not be directing.

Twin Peaks may still be very much alive at Showtime.

I love the world of Twin Peaks and wish things could have worked out differently.

After news of Lynch’s departure broke, Showtime quickly released a statement of their own.

We were saddened to read David Lynch’s statement today since we believed we were working towards solutions with David and his reps on the few remaining deal points. SHOWTIME also loves the world of Twin Peaks and we continue to hold out hope that we can bring it back in all its glory with both of its extraordinary creators, David Lynch and Mark Frost, at its helm.

Showtime will have their work cut out for them trying to win over the Twin Peaks faithful without the involvement of David Lynch. Lynch is the rare breed of autere that is lauded for his nonsensical filmmaking style. Lynch’s work is so iconic that vague, elusive and surreal movies are often categorized as in the style of David Lynch.

Showtime has a difficult road ahead of them as they attempt to replicate the Twin Peaks style. The network needs to come up with something completely out of left field yet relatable without being too dense and impenetrable. Twin Peaks was such an odd and unique representation of Lynch’s voice that many see it as his signature work. When Lynch does “dense and impenetrable”, fans just chock it up to Lynch being Lynch. If Showtime goes “dense and impenetrable” it will get called out for being an incomprehensible mess.
