Oats Studios Volume 1 Trailer from Neill Blomkamp

Neill Blomkamp‘s Volume 1 (2017) from Oats Studios stars Dakota Fanning and Sigourney Weaver. If you are a regular reader of FilmBook, you know that we love short films. We admire them so much so that we have created numerous short film categories and social media pages devoted to short films (there in the last paragraph).

A short film enables a writer to bring an idea for a short story or a full-fledged motion picture – the short film serves as a proof-of-concept, like the Whiplash short film did – to audiences around the world. The former, and possibly the latter, is what Neill Blomkamp has done so with Oats Studios “Volume 1”. There seems to be three or four distinct films showcased in this trailer. There is one where the world has been taken over by alien, humanoid lizards. There is a Vietnam-era film that seem to deal with possession of some kind. And there seems to be another one, the one starring Fanning, that deals with an event at a military or scientific installation.

Blomkamp’s District 9 is one of my favorite science fiction films of all time. District 9 was intelligent, beautiful to look at, and well made. District 9 came from a short film as did Chappie. With those facts in mind, I can not wait to see what he does with Volume 1. With Volume 1, Neill Blomkamp is returning to where he began – making short films. This time, its for his own production company Oats Studios.
