WONDER WOMAN (2017): Connie Nielsen Cast As Queen Hippolyta

Connie Nielsen

Connie Nielsen Will Appear In Wonder Woman. The Gladiator star will play the role of Queen Hippolyta in DC‘s upcoming film, Wonder Woman, which stars Gal Gadot and Chris Pine and is set for release in 2017.

Having portrayed a similarly regal role in Ridley Scott‘s Roman-themed epic, the Danish actress is well-suited for portraying the Queen of the Amazons. As mother to the titular protagonist, it is likely that she will figure prominently in the movie’s story. In addition to Hippolyta and Gadot’s Wonder Woman, Chris Pine is set to play Steve Trevor, a mortal ally and love interest of Wonder Woman.

Nielsen’s casting comes on the heel of rumors that Robin Wright will appear in the film as a “superhero.” Prior to the disclosure of that information, it was suspected by many that Wright would play Hippolyta. The announcement of Nielsen’s casting in that role effectively puts an end to such speculation, although Wright’s involvement in the film as a different character has been since confirmed. The two actresses weren’t the only ones considered for the role however. Indeed, according to Comic Book Movie, the role very nearly went to someone else:

Nicole Kidman was originally in the latter stages of negotiations to play Wonder Woman’s mother but schedule conflicts forced WB to look elsewhere.  For a time, the studio considered simply giving the Hippolyta role to Robin Wright but in the end, the studio has decided to cast Nielsen.

It is unknown if Warner Bros. is planning to have Nielsen and other actors in supporting roles reprise their characters in the company’s planned DC franchise crossover, The Justice League Part One (2017). Their presence will likely depend on the success of Wonder Woman and the reaction of audiences to each particular character.
