X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST (2014) New Movie Images From Empire Special

X-Men: Days of Future Past Empire variant covers

Empire X-Men Days Of Future Past special with 25 alternate covers. Empire magazine has decided to celebrate its 25th anniversary with an X-Men: Days of Future Past special, complete with 25 variant covers. Each cover depicts either a different character, or a different version of the same character. All together, they combine to form a polyptych, which transitions from a past setting (framing each character), to a starkly contrasted alternate version of the same setting. More specifically, it signifies the blending of X-Men: First Class with the original X-Men franchise; anchored by the twin faces of Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy, Patrick Stewart), Magneto (Michael Fassbender, Ian McKellen), and the Sentinel line, as well as the singular visage of Hugh Jackman for both versions of Wolverine. At a passing glance, the transition can be marked by a color change, from blue to red, of the article content details; but the action also hinges on director Bryan Singer. Frankly, it’s the only reason I can think of to justify his inclusion. At least it wasn’t an “everyone loves the director” group shot.

Also depicted are Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry, Nicholas Hoult, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Peter Dinklage, Omar Sy, Daniel Cudmore, Fan Bingbing, Boo Boo Stewart, Adan Canto, Evan Peters, Josh Helman and Lucas Till, in their respective roles.

The final cover image is likely to generate some debate among fans, in terms of how much of a departure, from the source designs, it may represent, versus how practical that change might be for the film. Well, the issue had been addressed, some.

Production designer John Myhre on the Sentinels, and the Mark X design:

“They’re biomechanical weapons. We had to come up with what would be the ultimate version that could actually, in principle, stop the X-Men. We started with this idea that they were almost made up of magnetic plates slapped over one another, imagining that the plates could contract or grow, so the Sentinel can be skinny to get through a small space or the plates can open up to become a bigger shape. So they have become virtually unstoppable.”

I may be reading too much into this, but it seems the one cover character that has been reported as largely sidelined, in the actual film, Rogue (Anna Paquin), is the only one in the red not wearing black/ dark colors. So, ghostly homage… ? Yeah – reading too much into it.

If X-Men: Days of Future Past comes anywhere near what is expected of it, this 25 variant collection would become part of something great – reminiscent of Entertainment Weekly’s coverage leading up to the original film. If it disappoints, then this exercise becomes a microcosmic re-tweet of the 1990s collector’s bubble. Lots of variant/ special edition covers marking events that, even when momentous, didn’t justify the cost of the collections. The bubble burst, hard times, yadda-yadda-yadda: no way I’m buying 25 versions of the same magazine issue. I can regard them quite nicely on the screen to my computation device (“excellent”).

That said, and just because there are giant robots involved, behold: the images combine to form Apolyptych Maximus!

I will admit, I always did like those expansive, wrap-around images of epic poses and massive battles; and altogether, this Empire treatment is a work of art, in some respects.

Of course, what’s a public display of mural styled art without a bit of appropriately themed graffiti, here or there. Let the meme-icry begin….
