Z FOR ZACHARIAH (2015) Movie Trailer: Beware Post-Apocalyptic Love Triangles

Z For Zachariah Trailer. Craig Zobel‘s Z For Zachariah (2015) movie trailer stars Chris Pine, Margot Robbie, and Chiwetel EjioforZ For Zachariah‘s plot synopsis: “In the wake of a disaster that wipes out most of civilization, two men and a young woman find themselves in an emotionally charged love triangle as the last known survivors.”

Visually appealing and narratively tread to the ground, were my first thoughts. This looks good, but I can’t shake the feeling that I’ve seen this before. Somewhere, multiple times, I’ve seen this before. The threat of violence this trailer keeps hinting at will surely become very real toward the end of the movie. There’s an undertone of male dominance and aggression here, as there are two burly and unhinged men vying for one woman who was originally written to be much younger. You see, even after this society is gone, a patriarchy just like it arises once more – this seems to be the indictment here. This is based on a 1974 science-fiction novel by Robert C. O’Brien, but is veering off-book quite heavily, if the casting of Margot Robbie is any indication. At least that’s what I’m told – I haven’t read the book, but this seems to be the main complaint from its readers – Hollywood is bastardizing the superior, original story. I’m shocked.

In the end, we’ll have to see. Trailer editing is such magic that it can make an atrocious film look beautiful (see Battle: Los Angeles or Terminator Salvation) and an incredible film look downright silly (see Adventureland). This could, of course, be simply mediocre. Something you’ve seen, somewhere, multiple times before.

I grew up in Hamburg to a German father and Ecuadorian mother. Obsessive student of film, Hip-Hop, and stand-up comedy. I love the dark dreambox that is the cinema auditorium. I love mountains and the ocean, but am equally exhilarated by the jungle of the city. I hope to one day create something that hits someone in the brain with thunderous effect.
