Emily Browning signs on to American Gods. The Sucker Punch and Legend star will play the role of Laura Moon in the planned Starz adaptation of the acclaimed fantasy book.
The show’s production team was enthusiastic about the addition of Browning to the cast. Showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green praised her acting in other projects and voiced confidence in her ability to bring the character to life. Even more impressively, Neil Gaiman, who authored the novel on which the series is based, said he approved of Browning’s casting. He said that Laura Moon was a “tricky” character in the book and added that the version in the show would be even more so, although he was sure that Browning would be able to pull the role off.
Set in the present day, American Gods introduces viewers to a world where the deities of old are finding themselves supplanted by gods who represent the excesses of modern society:
The plot of American Gods posits a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs. Its protagonist, Shadow Moon, is an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday, a conman but in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities.
As Laura Moon, Emily Browning plays Shadow Moon’s wife, who has been preparing for her husband’s pending prison release. Little does she know that she will go on an unexpected journey that leads her to an epiphany about her relationship and affords her a second chance to get things right.
