Paul Rudd speaks about Ant-Man sequel. The star of the 2015 superhero movie corroborated reports that a follow-up is being planned and addressed his role in the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Appearing at the Sundance Film Festival to present his latest film, Robert Burnett’s The Fundamentals of Caring, Rudd was interviewed by Superherohype about his role in the lucrative Marvel franchise. As the site notes, Ant-Man was a huge gamble for the company on account of audiences’ relative unfamiliarity with the title character, but their risk paid off when the film proved a box office success. Apparently, the returns were great enough to convince Marvel and it’s parent company Disney that the character was not only viable, but deserving of a sequel.
Asked about the proposed film, tentatively titled Ant-Man and the Wasp and set for release on July 6th, 2018, Rudd explained that although arrangements still need to be made, Marvel is committed to making it:
“I know that when I signed up for it that there was always the potential that they’d do another one or it would tie in in some way, but specifically, I wasn’t aware and I’m still not totally aware of how that’s the case,” he told us. “We are doing a second one, so those meetings are starting to be scheduled and underway as far as what it’s going to be. We’ll start writing it soon.”
The Ant-Man star also talked about his widely-suspected involvement in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War, revealing that he is indeed present, albeit briefly, in the movie:
“It’s been very easy,” Rudd said about scheduling with all the potential Marvel movies he has coming up. “Marvel’s been great, as far as if I have something else and they’ll work around it. It’s not like I’m working on a series which might be a little trickier as far as schedule. I worked on ‘Civil War’ and I didn’t really work on it for very long, but as far as ‘Ant-Man 2,’ I already know when that’s going to go, so you just kind of plan accordingly. If anything comes along that I can film before or after and it works out time-wise and it makes sense, Marvel’s been supportive.”
