John Barrowman Announces He Is Done Playing Malcolm Merlyn In Arrow
Arrow actor John Barrowman reveals that he will no longer appear as Malcolm Merlyn on The CW‘s DC superhero show. Please be advised that this story contains spoilers.
The news comes in the wake of the season finale, which saw Oliver Queen’s long-time frenemy die off-screen when he took Thea’s place on a landmine. While the program has been known to bring back characters from the dead and Merlyn has in fact been “killed” before, the series regular made it clear that he is gone for good this time.
Posting a video on Instagram addressing the matter, Barrowman admitted that he was “very sad” to have to leave the show and his co-stars behind but nevertheless understood that it was a necessary part of the show’s development.

Barrowman’s character became more thoroughly ingrained in the Arrowverse the longer he existed, having played pivotal roles in both The Flash and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. Based off the DC Comics character Merlyn created by Mike Friedrich, Neal Adams and Dick Dillin, Barrowman’s Malcolm Merlyn has even had the cyclical journey of being featured in comic book series based off the show Arrow, which is itself based off the DC Comics character Green Arrow.
