Hans Zimmer retires from scoring superhero movies. The Academy Award-winning composer said he is done working in the genre after providing music for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Making the announcement in an interview on the BBC, Zimmer explained that he is exhausted after committing so much time and effort to films based on comic books. He is perhaps best known for the memorable themes he composed for Christopher Nolan‘s Dark Knight trilogy, a series of films that the composer spent 11 years working on, as he noted during the interview.
After scoring Man of Steel and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Zimmer was ready to swear off the genre when he was approached about participating in Batman v Superman. Per Zimmer’s own admission, the experience was laborious for him:
“This one was very hard for me to do, to try to find new language,” Zimmer said of the new movie.
While he may not do any more DC movies, he’s still providing music for some big tentpole movies, including Ron Howard’s Inferno and Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk. We’ll have to wait and see just how long this retirement lasts for the 58-year-old German composer.
