The showrunner of the series, Caroline Dries,  spoke about the decision to take the soap-opera approach and just recast the role, while going on with the series. They already had a few episodes written so it seemed like the easiest approach to Ruby Rose’s shocking exit as Katy Kane, however, it didn’t feel right for Dries. After a discussion with executive producer of the series, Greg Berlanti, the pair came to the decision to just reboot Batwoman as a different character. This would not only force the audience to have to not overlook the elephant in the room with a recast, but it’d also pay respects to everything Rose put into the Katy Kane character. How the series will address Katy Kane’s exit is unknown but the new lead character’s name will be Ryan Wilder. Wilder will be younger than Katy Kane, still a member of the LGBTQ community and their entrance to the series will chronicle how they becomes Batwoman. The show’s second season had to shut down production due to the Hollywood shutdown the pandemic forced, which gives them time to reevaluate how they’ll implement the change and cast a new lead.
